The Academy of the Oscars is becoming more diversified and balanced in terms of parity. Thanks to Lady Gaga, Claire Foy and Josiane Balasko to name but a few, this year, women represent 50% of the artists invited to join the ranks of the prestigious institution of Hollywood. Ten out of the seven occupational categories represented at the Oscars, including the filmmakers, have even recruited more women than men, points out in its press release the Academy of arts and sciences of the cinema, which has chosen total of 842 new members from 59 countries.
In 2016, after several years of criticism scathing about the composition of its colleges, considered to be too male and too white to reflect the diversity of society, the Academy had announced a doubling of the number of women and members from ethnic minorities by 2020. At the time, 93% of its 6,000 members were white, 76% men, with a median age of 63 years. Now if the new members accept the invitation (this is usually the case, with the notable exception of Woody Allen and, most recently, Emmanuelle Seigner, to protest against the expulsion of her husband Roman Polanski), the proportion of women within the Academy will go this year to 32%, compared to 25% in 2015.

29% of “people of color”
An evolution which does not stop at gender parity since 29% of the new class is composed of “people of color”, in other words, all those who are not strictly of european origin (black, asian, Latin american, arab, polynesian, mestizo, etc), in accordance with the usual definition for the statistics in the United States. The Academy has delivered on its promise of doubling the proportion of “people of color”, which will represent 16% of its members this year, up from only 8% in 2015. Among the newcomers, there are a number of artists to the cast of Black Panther , as the actors Sterling K. Brown, Winston Duke, or Letitia Wright, and the team of Crazy Rich Asians (the film director Jonathan Chu, and actress Gemma Chan).

To boost its diversity, the Academy has had to go recruit internationally, which are of particular benefit to French artists.
