“After twelve days of fierce fighting” against the fires, “I am able to announce that the Landiras fire is now fixed”, announced the prefect of Gironde and New Aquitaine to the press, “the inhabitants will be able to return their home”.

The second fire which also hit the Gironde at La Teste-de-Buch, in the Arcachon basin, was also declared fixed on Saturday.

“Be careful, the fires are fixed. They are not extinguished. This means that there are no longer any active outbreaks,” added Ms. Buccio.

Despite the scale of these two fires, no injuries are to be deplored in the population, said the boss of Sdis 33 Marc Vermeulen.

For 12 days, the two fires ravaged 20,800 hectares – twice the area of intramural Paris. More than 36,000 people were evacuated.
