archaeologists in mexico have discovered hundreds of remains of very great value in a cave located on the maya site of Chichen Itza, in Yucatan (southeast Mexico), said on Monday a researcher responsible for this project. This cave had been discovered there more than fifty years by the local population who had advised the national Institute of anthropology and history (INAH). A researcher sent by the INAH had, for some unknown reason, decided to hide the entrance to this cavity, and was instead to write a technical report in which it did not indicate the location of the discovery.

In a first time, the archaeologist Guillermo de Anda, who has worked for three years on a project in the region, did not pay attention to this report. Last year, while he was studying in one of the sinkholes located two kilometers from the temple of Kukulcan, in the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, he fell on the cave Balamku. “What we discovered was incredible, nothing was altered and one of the incense burners has become a stalagmite,” said Guillermo de Anda.

“guts of the gods”

archaeologists, who have traveled so far approximately 460 meters “four legs ” or walking”, will continue to explore the cave, deep of about 24 meters, and to analyze the archaeological objects in situ. The experts believe that the biggest incense burners may have dated from the time the post-classic period (700-1000 a.d.). According to them, all these objects were brought to the site via these tunnels, “winding” leading up to the caves where they believed surely achieve “the guts of the gods”.

“It is possible that we find materials that are more ancient, including skeletons, under the sludge and sediment”

Guillermo de Anda, archaeologist

Guillermo de Anda told that the Maya who still inhabit the Yucatan had warned that a coral snake was the guardian of the cave. In fact, a reptile of this type, which is among the most venomous in the world, was blocked for four days access to the cave for the scientists. At the request of the Mayans living near the site, the group of archaeologists has therefore organized for six hours a spiritual ceremony of “expiation” in order to avoid a drama in penetrating into the cavity.

people have argued that the first archaeologist who, there are more than fifty years, had walled up the cave had conducted this same ritual during the two days. In the mayan language, Balamku means “god, “jaguar”, in reference to this mythical animal, which they believed had the ability to enter or leave the underground world.
