Human rights activists have recognized the persecuted in Belarus opponents of Lukashenka as prisoners of conscience

candidate for the post of the President of Belarus Victor Babariko, his son Edward, and retired from the race blogger Sergei Tikhanovski and eight companions Tikhanovski should be considered prisoners of conscience. This statement was made by the international human rights organization Amnesty International (AI).

According to human rights activists, the mentioned persons were detained only for peacefully exercised their civil rights and should be released immediately. The Belarusian authorities must stop political persecution, intimidation and other repressive measures against independent media. All of this violates the commitments of Minsk in the framework of international law, stated in a statement.

Recall that the presidential elections scheduled for 9 August. “To compete” with the current country’s leader Alexander Lukashenko decided Victor Babariko, however, on 18 June it became known that he was detained in the “case of Belgazprombank” — this credit organization he previously led. The initiative group of another competitor Lukashenko, videoblogger Tikhanovski refused to register. He was also detained many participants of actions in support of the opposition. As reported by the media, was arrested more than 270 people, including at least 14 journalists of “Radio Liberty”, Euroradio, Internet portals Tut.by, Onliner.by and others. A number of reporters were sentenced to 10-15 days of arrest for participation in the shares.
