At the Moscow zoo were born chick gentoo hornbills, or establishment of calao, rarely producing offspring in captivity.

As the portal of the Moscow city hall, citing the Director of the zoo Svetlana Akulov, the aviary of exotic birds listed in the International Red book, created conditions close to natural: there are growing acacia trees, the crown of which forms dense thickets. From November to April in the aviary specially increased humidity.

Birds native to New Guinea arrived in the capital’s zoo in 2015. Look at the chick in the pavilion “House of birds”, located on the old site.

Gentoo hornbills inhabit New Guinea, the Bismarck archipelago, the Solomon and the Moluccas. Calao feed on small invertebrates, insects and fruit.
