American scientists have tested the effectiveness of anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine and found it useless for the prevention of coronavirus. The corresponding study was published in the New England journal of Medicine.
Experiments conducted by the University of Minnesota online. They were attended by about 820 people in the US and Canada that had contact with sick coronavirus without PPE, but did not have symptoms of the disease, writes RIA “Novosti”.
Over the study period coronavirus was detected in 107 participants of the project, with 49 of these in five days took hydroxychloroquine, and 58 for the same period received placebo. Accordingly, among those taking the drug the risk of infection fell by 2.4%. According to the authors of the study, this rate is not a clinically significant result.
At the same time, scientists admit that the drug may be more effective for patients with severe symptoms of the coronavirus, but experimental evidence for this is not.
