Infectious disease physician, spoke about the likelihood of catching the plague in the twenty-first century

The authorities of China and Mongolia have reported new cases of the disease bubonic plague. How dangerous is this infection in the XXI century, the correspondent of “Rosbalt” explained infectious disease physician Elizabethan hospital in St. Petersburg Evgeny Daevas. “It should be understood that there are localized and generalized forms of the plague. The first is bubonic, in which the causative agent gets into regional lymph nodes, causing inflammation. Second lung, occurring in the form of sepsis, with mortality rates, which in the old days was close to 100%. “The black death” — it’s about pneumonic plague, which is transmitted by airborne droplets,” says infectious disease. The doctor notes that the patient bubonic plague to the opening of the bubo, is not dangerous for others, but when moving this shape into a septic or pulmonary becomes high, releasing the pathogen with biological fluids. In this case, can be transmitted to humans through the air. “The bubonic plague at this day is recorded in a number of countries, including Mongolia and China. On the territory of Russia’s Republic of Tyva, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria and a number of regions, and it is not uncommon. In China and Mongolia cases are recorded annually,” — said the expert. Eugene Daeva adds that the plague pathogen is a bacterium, gram-negative rod, a reservoir which in nature are rodents — marmots, ground squirrels, voles. In the city it can be mice and rats, and vectors — fleas. The normal distribution follows the pattern “rat — flea — man”, that is, the mechanism of transmission — through the bite. “However, there are other possible mechanisms: contact through broken skin and mucous membranes when cutting the skins, fecal-oral by eating insufficiently cooked meat of infected animals,” says the doctor.  According to her, good news for modern people is that plague is a bacterial infection and therefore responds well to treatment with antibacterial drugs in case of their timely reception. “There is also a live vaccine for specific prevention. Immunization is carried out annually: for individuals living in homes or traveling there. In the modern realities of mortality does not exceed 7% and, as a rule, it is due to the late appeal for medical help. Without treatment people die in 20-40% of cases due to the development of secondary pulmonary or secondary septic form of the disease” — sums up the Daeva. We will remind, earlier it became known that the bubonic plague revealed at cattleman’s in the city of Bayan Nur in Inner Mongolia in China, as well as two people in the West of Mongolia, in the region, which borders with the Republic of Altai.
