The political scientist explained what a bad idea extended voting in Russia

the Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko has proposed to continue to vote for several days, not limited to one day. This creates great risks of falsification of the procedure, told the correspondent of “Rosbalt” head of the Department of applied political science, HSE campus in St.-Petersburg Andrey Shcherbak.

“Usually, the electoral rule is such that all citizens vote in a single day. Yes, sometimes there are options of early and remote voting, and in all countries the elections are different, but to stretch the procedure for a few days, that’s rare. And because we have now the vote occurs on the amendments to the Constitution in very strange places: parks, playgrounds… serious doubts arise as to whether mechanisms of accountability and control can be applied in such conditions”, — said the analyst.

According to experts, voting of one week should be taken still as exceptional measures during a pandemic and how extraordinary experience.

“the Vote in 12 hours — from 8 am to 8 PM is quite comfortable for those who wanted to vote, to observe and to organize — said Andrey Shcherbak. — If you stretch the procedure, the question of transparency, there are large risks”.

Recall, with the idea of holding elections in a few days earlier by the Federation Council. Such a scenario is not ruled out a member of the CEC of the Russian Federation Evgeny Shevchenko, noting that the norm will need to be codified in law.
