The US wants to build its own fleet of icebreakers, and Russia has threatened it will defend national interests in the Arctic

The President of the United States Donald trump ordered to develop a program for the construction of icebreakers for the Arctic and Antarctic. In accordance with the provisions of the Memorandum of the head of state, the United States will develop and implement a programme of procurement of the icebreaker fleet to ensure Arctic safety, which will support the country’s national interests in the Arctic and Antarctic. The American leader has instructed the Minister of internal security, in coordination with the commandant of the U.S. Coast guard, Pentagon and energy Minister to examine the comparative operational and financial benefits and risks of the polar icebreaker fleet, consisting “of at least three heavy icebreakers heavy class (PSC)”. Trump also ordered to explore the possibility of renting icebreakers from partners in the coming years, while the country is not constructed its own icebreaker fleet. In turn, Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Ryabkov stated that Russia will not sit and watch if someone decides to test her willingness to protect national interests in the Arctic, reports TASS. He stressed that the Arctic should remain a platform for cooperation, not rivalry. “But we won’t stay calm if someone does not wish to specify — decide to test our ability to protect our national interests,” — said the Deputy Minister. In addition, according to him, Russia and the United States have no positive agenda in bilateral relations and do not see opportunities to change this situation. Ryabkov also emphasized the lack of trust between Moscow and Washington.
