Daniel Rondeau, aged 71, has just been elected to the French Academy with the armchair of Michel Déon (n° 8), in the first round with ten-eight votes against six for the historian Jean-Christian Petitfils. Rondeau was awarded the Grand Prix du roman of the French Academy in 2017 for the Mechanics of chaos (Grasset). He has published more than twenty books, among which novels ( In the march of time ), portraits of mediterranean cities ( T ager, Istanbul, Carthage, Alexandria ), of the autobiographical books ( The Enthusiasm, The Vines of Berlin ) and a biography of Johnny that had been noticed.
The armchair of Michel Déon, who died in December 2016, had struggled to find a successor after three “elections white”, that is to say an election without election (January 2019 November, 2018 and June 2018).

Second attempt
The former ambassador of France to Malta had already failed to be elected during his previous attempt: he had received twelve votes. He succeeds where many of the candidates to the chair of Michel Déon failed: Benoît Duteurtre, Pascal Bruckner, Charles Danzig, Alain Duault, Jérôme Clément, Frédéric Mitterrand, Bruno Racine and François Taillandier had not been able to get the votes needed to become immortal.
In march 2016, it had the elegance of withdrawing its application when Andrei Makine was presented (and was elected). Five seats remain to be filled: Max Gallo, Simone Veil, Jean d’ormesson, François Weyergans and Michel Serres.
