UNESCO regrets due to the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azul expressed deep regret over the actions of the Turkish authorities, who decided to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque without prior discussion with the organization, RIA “Novosti”.

“UNESCO Director-General deeply regrets the decision of the Turkish authorities adopted without prior dialogue to change the status of Hagia Sophia,” reads the communiqué of UNESCO.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree on conferring the status of a mosque the Hagia Sophia, abolishing the relevant decision of the Turkish authorities, 1934.
