“Boris Johnson is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met and despite what some commentators say, he has a good background,” said the former Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Mr. Sunak, 42, resigned with a bang from the Johnson government last week, bringing with him around 60 other members of the executive and ultimately the resignation of the Prime Minister.

He is now one of the ten candidates who presented themselves to succeed him, the eleventh having withdrawn on Tuesday.

“Did I disagree with him (Boris Johnson)? Yes, and that’s why I resigned,” he said, refusing however to “demonize Boris, exaggerate his faults and to deny his efforts”.

The race for the succession of the Prime Minister is officially launched and the official list of candidates – who must receive the support of 20 Conservative MPs – must be unveiled on Tuesday.

The name of the future Conservative leader will be known on September 5, the 1922 committee, the Conservative parliamentary group responsible for establishing the rules of the ballot, said on Monday.
